A Slower Life With God - The Quiet Work of Our Hands

After returning from my travels through the British Isles and Scotland, I found my soul longing for quieter moments — moments that felt almost like stepping back in time. Moments without constant electronic noise or distraction. Moments to dream, create with my hands, and enjoy the simple fruits of the land.

August often feels like that final stretch of summer light before the pruning and harvest of autumn. As I revisited my travel photos and journal notes, I was reminded how joyful it is to simply slow down and notice God’s beauty in people, nature, and everyday life. Somewhere along the way, we allowed the noise of the world to steal the joy of simplicity — the very place where dreams are nurtured.

What happened to craftsmanship, ingenuity, and the quiet pride of building something with our own hands? We once lived with a can-do attitude, where a simple handshake was a trusted contract and our word meant something. We reflected the integrity of God in the way we worked, served our neighbors, and cared for one another.

Today, so much of life has become centered around consumption instead of creation. We built businesses to stay relevant. We measure worth by productivity, followers, or monetary success. Technology promised life would become easier and more efficient, yet somehow, the more connected we became, the more disconnected our hearts have grown.

Even creativity is now competing with artificial intelligence and endless digital noise. But when we stop creating, we often stop dreaming. And when we stop dreaming, we stop believing there is something greater ahead of us.

We have become a culture that too often complains instead of creates. A culture chasing more, yet the soul was never designed to live only for the wants of self. We were created for something far deeper — to live with purpose, faith, imagination, and trust in God.

Scripture reminds us:

“For we are God’s handiwork,
created in Christ Jesus to do good works.”
(Ephesians 2:10)

There was a time when people worked with their hands not simply for profit, but because craftsmanship itself carried dignity and meaning. There was beauty in making bread, sewing garments, building furniture, growing gardens, and gathering around a table. Talents were passed from one generation to another.

Now we are told everything should be instant. The focus has shifted from God-centered living to self-centered living. And in all the noise, we risk forgetting the peace and freedom God intended for us.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world,
but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
(Romans 12:2)

True freedom is not found in possessions, status, or endless achievement. It is found in God. “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
(John 8:36) Faith is not meant to be a one-time emotional experience, but a true daily life lived with God — walking with Him, trusting Him, surrendering to Him.

May this month be an invitation for us to step back and peel away layers of distraction and doubt. To rediscover the joy of creating, dreaming, and living slowly again. To believe that God still places dreams within our hearts — not for selfish ambition, but so we may live fully, serve others, and glorify Him.

This afternoon, I brewed a fresh pot of Earl Grey tea from a small shop we visited on our travels. Sitting outside in the late sun with the breeze moving gently through the garden, I began sewing with beautiful wool yarn gathered from local farms in Scotland. In that simple moment, I felt such joy.

How many people truly dream anymore? How many allow themselves the time to sit quietly with God and imagine what could still be created through their lives?

As summer begins to fade, perhaps this is our reminder to stretch once more toward the light. To trust God again with our dreams. To work with our hands. To share stories. To sit together slowly and breathe in the gift of ordinary moments.

“Keep trusting in the Lord and do what is right in his eyes. Fix your heart on the promises of God, and you will dwell in the land, feasting on his faithfulness. Find your delight  and true pleasure in Yahweh, and he will give you what you desire the most. Give God the right to direct your life, and as you trust him along the way, you’ll find he pulled it off perfectly!”
