Simplifying Life With God

Today, we often hear the mantra, “simplify, simplify, simplify.” With so many layers of “time-snatchers” – from digital media to day-to-day distractions – it feels more like a challenge.

Recently I was waiting in line at the grocery store check-out. To my left were layers of magazines touting the latest Hollywood romances, self-help tools, fashion, travel and cooking tips. As I glanced around, I spotted Real Simple. I pulled a copy off the rack and started to flip through the pages of endless “real simple” time-saving solutions and ideas: simple gardening, simple decorating, simple exercising, simple recipes, simple ways to plan and pack for summer vacation and travels…and on and on!

My turn came to step forward and empty my cart on the conveyor belt, so I put the magazine back on the rack. I realized I felt more overwhelmed than relieved from all the quick and simple anecdotes!  Sure, many of the recommendations were good advice, but the message I received was “rush, rush, rush” and get as much done in the smallest amount of time possible. Rushing through the “real simple” moments feels like dashing through the present, which really is the essence of life.

On my drive home, many thoughts of conversations from earlier in the day were running through my mind.  I needed to take a break and I turned on some instrumental music. I took a deep breath and began to softly pray in thanksgiving to God for His love and the blessings we receive throughout the moments of our everyday lives.  I opened the windows to let in the fresh cool spring air and the sweet aroma from the blossoming flowers along the road.

When I arrived home, I turned on the hot water kettle to make a cup of tea. Once the groceries were put away, I went to my study to check emails and phone messages, clearing everything off my desk to prepare for the next day’s agenda. Then, I sat down with my cup of tea and took a deep breath to reflect upon the day's conversations and my thoughts.  Oh, how a couple of sips of my favorite tea always calms my soul!

I began to hear on my heart, Psalm 4:10: Be still and know I am God.  This verse gives one’s heart a peace and encouragement to know that God’s sovereignty and power is always with us as we trust in Him amidst days of doubts and uncertainty.I took out my Bible and my journal, and began to pen some thoughts and ideas that were on my heart.  Leaning into the Bible for comfort and guidance as I often do, I decided I would start to read the Book of Nahum that my ladies prayer group and I are studying as we continue our journey through the Minor Prophets.

This summer, take in your surroundings and appreciate them more – instead of wanting more. Breathe in the fragrant morning air. Put your toes in the water. Feel the sunshine. Enjoy the plants and the song of the birds.

Our senses were created to appreciate being in the moment. When you are busy rushing, you miss out on everything around you!

This summer, when you think “simplify,” think of concentrating on the things that are ALREADY right in front of you. Keep it simple and enjoy what is around you. Be present with other people. The simplicity of God is what gives us our hope and peace.

Joy will come; it is deeper. Joy comes with what God has for us; it’s His everlasting love for us.  Even on the bad days, be reminded that you already have a lot. Spend time with God and take in the beauty around you. It doesn’t have to be complicated and it’s too simple to be a list item in a magazine!
